Start with the device you use
On Android or iPhone, install Signal and follow the setup instructions shown in the app. On Windows or Mac, install Signal Desktop after Signal is already working on your phone, then link the computer by scanning the QR code from Signal on your primary mobile device.
How to install Signal
The setup process depends on whether you are installing Signal on a mobile device or adding Signal Desktop to an existing account.
Install and open Signal
Complete the installation, open the app, and follow the prompts shown on your device. Mobile setup handles registration or linking; desktop setup displays a QR code for device linking.
Link Signal Desktop to your phone
For Windows or Mac, open Signal on your phone, go to Linked Devices, and scan the QR code shown by Signal Desktop. Desktop registration by itself is not supported.
iPhone and iPad
Signal requires iOS or iPadOS 15 or later. Install the app, open it, and follow the registration or device-linking instructions for your Apple device.
Android phones and tablets
Signal requires Android 6.0 or later. Use a stable internet connection and enough available storage to complete the download and installation.
Windows computers
Signal Desktop supports 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Signal must already be installed and working on your Android phone or iPhone before linking the computer.
Mac computers
Signal Desktop supports macOS 13 or later. After installation, link the Mac to Signal on your phone instead of creating a separate desktop registration.

Which devices can I download Signal for?
Signal is available for Android, iPhone and iPad, and Signal Desktop can be installed on supported Windows and Mac computers. Each device follows its own installation or linking process.
What Android version does Signal require?
Signal requires Android 6.0 or later. If installation fails, check the Android version, internet connection, available storage, and the account currently signed in to the app store.
What iOS version does Signal require?
Signal requires iOS 15 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 15 or later on iPad. Installation and updates are handled through the Apple App Store.
Can I install Signal directly on Windows or Mac?
You can install Signal Desktop on a supported Windows or Mac computer, but you cannot register a desktop account by itself. Signal Desktop must first be linked to Signal running on an Android phone or iPhone.
How do I link Signal Desktop to my phone?
Open Signal Desktop to display its QR code. On your phone, open Signal settings, choose Linked Devices, select the option to link a new device, and scan the QR code shown on the computer.
